New management, fresh year, ASBK to converge on Wakefield Park Raceway in 2016
Fans, teams and riders alike are set to be treated when the Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK) heads to Wakefield Park Raceway for Round 2 of the series this year, after a lengthy hiatus from the iconic venue.
The ASBK together with Motorcycling Australia (MA) has recently reinforced it’s relationship with Wakefield Park Raceway, and with the appropriate track inspections having now taken place, MA has given the venue the seal of approval to host Round 2 of the ASBK come March 25-27, 2016.
Motorcycling Australia’s National Technical Director Peter Doyle shared his excitement in taking the strengthened Australian Road Racing Championship back to Wakefield Park Raceway in Goulburn, and said with all the boxes now all ticked, it was an easy decision for management to add the venue to the 2016 ASBK calendar.
“We visited Wakefield Park Raceway in December last year, and with a new track management team on board, we have worked together to make sure the venue is in prime condition to host a round of our Australian Superbike Championship,” he said.
“The track itself and the facilities at Wakefield Park are in great working condition, and the venue is continuing to make improvements daily, in preparation for the second round of the 2016 ASBK.
“Our primary focus is always on rider safety, and we are pleased to announce that Wakefield Park meets all of the standards required, so we’re all in for a great round of racing.”
Motorcycling Australia CEO David Cottee also shared, that by adding Wakefield Park Raceway to the ASBK calendar for 2016, the series is taking yet another step in the right direction.
“We are very pleased to have been able to give Wakefield Park the seal of approval. We know that rider’s safety is ensured, and Wakefield Park management should be very proud to be added to a great bunch of host venues for this year’s ASBK championship,” he said.
“Since I have joined Motorcycling Australia, I have been thrilled to hear that the Australian Superbike Championship went from strength to strength throughout last year, and I believe with a great team behind the scenes that the success of 2015 can be replicated this year too.
“This is just one of the many exciting announcements that the ASBK team have been working on behind the scenes, and we are all pleased to be a part of many more in the lead up to round one.”
Motorcycling New South Wales (MNSW) General Manager Daniel Gatt, also made comment on the importance of the ASBK national event at Wakefield Park for MNSW.
“It is awesome to have Wakefield Park Raceway back on the Motorcycling NSW calendar. We have developed a positive relationship with the team at Wakefield Park in only a short space of time, that we are sure will continue to grow,” he said.
“Our commitment to Wakefield Park is demonstrated by the venue hosting round 2 of the ASBK and the NSW Road Racing Championships in 2016, as well as all motorcycle club events (predominately St George MCC and PCRA) now being conducted under MA sanction.”
“It’s been some years since ASBK visited Wakefield Park and we are certain with the calibre of competition expected in the series that it will provide close and exciting racing for riders and spectators alike around the technical Wakefield Park layout.
“We look forward to ASBK converging on Goulburn on March 25-27.”
Wakefield Park Raceway Operations Manager Matt Baragwanath, also shared his thoughts on hosting round two of the Australian Superbike Championship in March.
“Here at Wakefield Park Raceway we are thrilled to be welcoming back the ASBK for round 2 in March, and we’ve very excited to have Australia’s premier motorcycle racing category back at the nation’s spectator track,” Wakefield Park operations manager Matt Baragwanath said.
“The ASBK round will attract many visitors from outside the region into Goulburn over the Easter long weekend, so it will provide major benefits for the local economy, with all accommodation venues expected to be at full capacity over that period.
“We are constantly making improvements to the venue and we can’t wait for Australia’s top motorcycle competitors to battle it out for victory.
“We’re also looking forward to hosting a number of other MA-sanctioned events throughout 2016, catering for all levels of motorcycle enthusiasts.”
