Toparis Clinches Supersport Title With Phillip Island Clean Sweep
Goulburn rider Tom Toparis is the 2019 Motorsports TV Australian Supersport Champion, securing the title with his victory in Race 1.
Toparis battled ferociously with Nic Liminton in Race 1, the two riders repeatedly swapping positions before Liminton crashed at Lukey Heights on the final lap.
An ecstatic Toparis said the windy conditions made it an especially challenging race.
“It was a crazy race, the wind was as bad as it’s ever been and I had to change my body on the bike,” Toparis said.
“Coming out of Turn 2, we all had the same moment and in the end I was just doing what I had to do without crashing.
“Unfortunately, Nic crashed at the end but I’m rapt to take the championship, my first time winning an Australian title.
“I can’t thank my family and my team enough – we’ve won so many races. To do it on the Yamaha, it’s an awesome bike to ride and I’m so grateful for everyone who’s given me the opportunity to win the championship.”
Liminton was second in Race 2, but the overall podium positions went to Aidan Hayes and Jack Passfield, thanks to their consistent performances in the two races, and the retirement of Oliver Bayliss due to a crash at Turn 1 in Race 1.
“We’ve been putting in a lot of work to get the bike right, and it all came together – it was a great battle out there,” Hayes said.
“Me and Aidan had a cracking battle all weekend; unfortunately, something happened to Olly in the first race and he couldn’t go to the end,” Passfield said.
The Motorsports TV Supersport Championship will conclude at the final Motul Pirelli ASBK round, 1-3 November at Sydney Motorsport Park.
