Stunt Rider Dave McKenna to Supercharge Hidden Valley Raceway
Round 4 at Hidden Valley Raceway, Darwin NT (June 28 – July 1) is tantalisingly close and stunt rider Dave McKenna is set to take the crowd by storm. With his MT-09 and MT-10 Supercharged drift bikes, he is sure to capture the attention of onlookers with a stunt show that simply can’t be missed at the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK)!
McKenna has been honing his craft for years and cannot wait to show off his tricks to the Darwin crowd; “I grew up on a farm and my dad built me a motocross track when I was five,” McKenna said. “That kept me busy till I was 13 and I started watching videos of the Crusty Demons. That caught my attention and I knew that’s what I wanted to do. It took me awhile until I was able to buy a road bike, but once I did I practiced all weekend long and it all kicked off from there!”
The stunt rider came from very humble beginnings; “I’m fully supported by Yamaha but the beginning of my career was quite interesting as I worked in China for several years. It started off with a 10-week contract and they loved it so much over there, that I managed to stay for up there for three years! That started it all really and I knew I could forge a career out of it. After that adventure, I knew that I wanted to come back to Australia and continue in stunt riding.”
Two bikes will be brought out for stunt riding at Hidden Valley Raceway; “Working with Yamaha was almost perfect timing with the launch of the MT-09, which is the perfect bike for what I do. That’s the bike I use for the more technical stunts, such as circle work and stoppies. I will also be bringing my MT-10 that I don’t get to ride too often, due to it being supercharged. It’s a full on dedicated drift bike that has been stretched out and has extra steering lock, with over 250 horsepower. That bike has to be my favorite for getting the blood pumping. We take the bikes and perform at a number of events such as expo’s, MotoGP, dealer openings and of course ASBK. Anywhere there is a crowd is where I like to perform.”
McKenna provided a preview about what we can look forward to over the weekend; “The fans at Hidden Valley Raceway can expect a lot because we have a massive straight there. I will be bringing both bikes, so that opens up the possibilities. We can really open up the bikes and get it into sixth gear and can perform massive stoppies. It’s going be great fun! This year I will have some dedicated time slots and the crowds will love it. I won’t be able to complain about the space we will have.
“I will be riding on Saturday and Sunday at ASBK Round 4 and I can’t wait to get out there. We will be very busy but I would much rather be on the bike than standing around, that’s for sure. I’m a fan of the ASBK Championship and its very interesting to see the standings and how tight the championship is in the moment,” McKenna finished.
