Simpson at the double

South Australian rider Ollie Simpson (Phillip Island Grand Prix) has won two races from two starts in the Moto 3 / 125GP class at the opening 2015 ASBK Championship round held at Phillip Island on Saturday.

Simpson put in two flawless performances to claim maximum points for the day, and will be looking to make it three on the trot when the third race for the class takes place on Sunday.

Race 1

Simpson took another step to justifying the hype surrounding his ASBK assault in 2015, with a clinical opening race ride at Phillip Island.

Simpson lead the race from start to finish – capitilising on his qualifying spot at the front of the grid to streak clear in the six-lap race.

The South Australian improved his best race lap time on each of the first four laps, to finish almost 12 seconds clear of nearest rival Matt Barton (ETS Race Fuels).

Barton did well to post a best-lap time nearly a full second better than his qualifying time to finish 4.5 seconds ahead of Callum Barker (K1 Racing).

Barker edged out local rider Ted Collins (Auldana Foundations) – pipping him at the line, with Tom Bramich (Ron Angel Classic Racing) finishing in fifth.

Race 2

Race two panned out in similar fashion to the openier, with Simpson again claiming a comprehensive race win.

The second race was shortened due to time constraints following incidents in both the Australian Superbike class and the World Superbike class, turning it into a four-lap affair.

Simpson kept main rival Barton at bay with nearly a nine second gap between the two riders as the chequered flag was raised.

Lachlan Kavney (Bullet Racing) was a further five seconds behind in third place, edging out Bramich for a spot on the podium.

Brian Houghton (Latters Conshift) rounded out the top five, with one race still be be contested for the round to take place on Sunday.
