Pirelli Tops the Podium Again in ASBK at Winton
Pirelli teams have stretched their advantage in round three of the 2017 Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli at Winton Motor Raceway in Victoria, victorious in the premier Superbike class, as well as Supersport, Supersport 300 and the R3 Cup.
Winton, 12 May 2017 – It was a winning weekend for Pirelli racers at the recent Winton Motor Raceway round of the 2017 Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli, as Wayne Maxwell (Yamaha Racing Team) claimed a perfect weekend on-board his YZF-R1M.
After taking pole position with a new circuit best lap of 1m20.290s using the SC2 front and SC0 rear tyre combination, Maxwell went on to win both of Sunday’s 16-lap races and claim a new lap record of 1m20.688s in the process. He raced on the SC2 front and SU0794 rear tyres, however the SC1 front tyre was also a popular choice over race distance.
Maxwell was joined on the overall podium by defending champion Troy Herfoss (Crankt Protein Honda Racing) in second, while Daniel Falzon (Caterpillar JD Racing Yamaha) maintained his points lead in fifth overall for the round after setting the fastest lap – a new record at the time – in race one.
In Supersport, Next Gen Motorsports Suzuki’s Ted Collins was untouchable throughout the round, scoring pole with a new best lap of 1m23.545s and then going on to dominate the pair of 13-lap races around the recently-resurfaced, tight and technical three-kilometre circuit. He also claimed a new lap record with a 1m22.806s in race one, using the SC1 front and SU1148 rear tyre options.
Pirelli’s success continued in Supersport 300, as Reid Battye (Kawasaki) topped the Up to 300s over Scott Nicholson (Kawasaki) and Yannis Shaw (Kawasaki), while Tom Bramich (Yamaha) led Zac Levy (Yamaha) and Jack Mahaffy (Yamaha) in Over 300 for a double podium sweep. A new lap record of 1m32.462s was set by Oli Bayliss (Kawasaki), as all used the Diablo Supercorsa 110/70-17 SC1 front and 140/70-17 SC2 rear tyres.
Likewise in the all-Yamaha R3 Cup ranks, as the impressive Mahaffy won all three races across the weekend to take victory over Hunter Ford and Jack Passfield, who raced to a new lap record of 1m32.824s in the second leg. They also used the Diablo Supercorsa 110/70-17 SC1 front and 140/70-17 SC2 rear combination, which have proven the class of the field this season.
“Pirelli again proved competitive in all classes with outstanding results at round three of the ASBK championship at Winton Motor Raceway,” commented Pirelli product manager Garry Crilly. “Including new qualifying and race records, a white-wash in all Superbike and Supersport 600 races, confirming Pirelli have the competitive edge over the opposition in all conditions. We now look forward to a short break before round four at Darwin’s Hidden Valley.”
Round four of the 2017 Australian Superbike Championship will be contested at Hidden Valley Raceway in the Northern Territory on 7-9 July. Pirelli Motorcycle Tyres are imported and distributed exclusively in Australia by Link International. Visit www.linkint.com.au for additional information.
