Night of Champions cements a successful year of ASBK

The 2016 Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli, Night of Champions dinner has concluded following what was a gripping and action packed weekend at Winton Motor Raceway over September 30 to October 2.

Amongst the newly crowned 2016 Australian Superbike Champion Crankt Protein Honda Racing Team’s Troy Herfoss, was an array of illustrious stars who all joined in on the night presenting championship trophies, engaging in a question and answer session and enjoying the night’s festivities.

Motorcycling Australia’s Acting President Peter Goddard, also a past Australian Superbike Champion attended the dinner sharing on the night, his thoughts on being back at Winton Motor Raceway, and the continued strive to better the Championship and Motorcycling Australia processes.

“This is where it all started for me here at Winton, and it’s great that we are back here tonight,”  Goddard reflected while on stage.

“I am really looking forward to the future, it’s fantastic to see all of you out there – all two hundred and eighty people here tonight, and I think this is just going to grow and grow and grow!”

“Thank you all for your support. We all have to stay positive and keep pushing this sport further in to the future and bring it in to the 21st century,” he concluded.

Motorcycling Australia’s Operations and Events Director Martin Port was enthused by the turn out and support from Australia’s leading road race riders, as well as the guest appearances from some of Australia finest champions.

“The Night of Champions dinner was a great success. It was encouraging for the future of the championship to see so many ASBK competitors participating in the night. To have so many past Australian Superbike Champions there only took the night to a whole new level,” Port said.

“The amount of support we have received for the 2016 season has been phenomenal and the ASBK Management Team can’t thank all the competitors and our championship partners enough for their commitment to the growth of the championship.

“It was a great way to cement what has been a fantastic year and we look forward to moving on with bigger and better things planned for the 2017 season,” he concluded.

World Endurance Champion and Australian Superbike ambassador Steve Martin shared his honour in attending, and being a part of the growing championship as well as some of his highlights from the year.

“It’s a pleasure to be here tonight and for me there are a lot of memories flooding back, especially when I sit here amongst these past champions. I have seen each one of them dominate the sport, and I am proud to have had the opportunity work with them too,” he started.

“There have been so many highlights this year. I think that the video highlights montage we saw at the start of the night says it all.

“It has been pretty exciting all year with so many different winners. Honestly, with the championship coming down to the wire you really didn’t know who was going to win, and everyone has been so passionate in following it.

“The emotion on Herfoss’ face when he took that win was priceless, and tonight it’s painful for a lot of guys but for Herfoss and the other champions we have in the room can now let their hair down,” Martin concluded.

The Australian Superbike Management Team would like to thank everyone for their support throughout 2016, and with the continuation of the team, the progression and the continued support, we look forward to bringing you a comprehensive 2017 package.
