Mahaffy dominates YMF R3 Cup at Winton

Races Two and Three of the YMF R3 Cup were dominated by Jack Mahaffy (JDS Moto, Yamaha YZF-R3) after winning Saturday’s Race One. Mahaffy continued his strong form throughout the Spokes.com.au presents Round 3 at Winton Motor Raceway, part of the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli.

Race Two

The all-conquering Jack Mahaffy won Race Two of the YMF R3 Cup class. Tommy Edwards (Alpinestars, Yamaha YZF-R3) led into turn one but Mahaffy was right on his rear wheel. Mahaffy managed to overtake Edwards by the end of Lap One with relative ease.

In the mid-stages of the race Jack Mahaffy was pulling a significant gap to Edwards, over two and half seconds. Edwards then lost second position to Hunter Ford (O Fox, Yamaha YZF-R3). Edwards lost his podium position to Jack Passfield (Stay Upright, Yamaha YZF-R3), moving out of a podium placing.

The win was achieved by Mahaffy, followed by Hunter Ford two seconds behind, Jack Passfield close behind in third.

Race Three
Race Three was another master class from Jack Mahaffy who delivered the race victory yet again. The victory marked a clean sweep from the young rider for The YMF R3 Cup races.

As the bikes took off from the starting line, Tommy Edwards placed his bike into the lead at turn one. It wasn’t before long that Mahaffy was challenging him for first position. Mahaffy disposed of Tommy Edwards to take the lead and it was a Mahaffy domination from then on. Edwards lost his second place position to Hunter Ford later in the race.

Mahaffy was relatively unchallenged for the duration of the race with his three and a half second gap to the chasing Hunter Ford.

As Mahaffy took the checkered flag it would be Ford in second and Tommy Edwards to finish the podium placings.

Reactions from the riders
Jack Mahaffy
I just came of a crash from the Hi-Tec Batteries Supersport 300 race, so I was trying to keep my confidence up, it was a great race. I just focused on keeping those lap times down and hitting those lines!”

Hunter Ford
It’s a tough track with the hard chicanes and I couldn’t quite catch Jack (Mahaffy) again but it was a great race from the winner.”

Tommy Edwards
Overall it was a good race, I couldn’t quite tag along the back of Jack (Mahaffy) but we managed to keep it on the road and have decent pace throughout the duration of the race.
