Local Spencer ready for Supersport challenge
Launceston local rider Jason Spencer will be looking to chalk up another career highlight when he contests the Supersport class at the fourth round of the 2015 Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli.
The round takes place this weekend at Symmons Plains in Tasmania, and Spencer will be one of the many locals looking to have an impact against some of the best riders in the country.
Speaking ahead of the round-four event, 40 year-old Spencer said that it is always a great event for local riders when the national championship comes to town.
“It’s not something we see every year, so I am really excited to have a go at it,” he said.
“I joined the Tasmanian Motorcyle Club in 1996 and was racing a bucket, then 350, moved up to 600’s about ten years ago in club events.
“When the Superbikes come or the ASBK events come to town we generally enter for the fun, and look forward to having a ride.
Spencer said that there is an air of excitement around the club, as it gets set to showcase both the venue and the club to everyone around the country.
“Everyone is very excited here – it is great to have a national level event come down to Tasmania.
“There are a lot of guys on the club committee that are keen to ensure it is a great success so that we get it back again, and the local riders are all pretty keen
“I’m not sure how we will go but competing against Australia’s best is always an eye-opener.”
And while Spencer doesn’t have high expectations in terms of performance on the bike, he is looking forward to having an event he will remember for the rest of his life.
“I have no goals or aims for the weekend – I’m just happy to get out there and get amongst it – the highlight for me is to be riding with some of Australia’s best riders.
“I remember in 2006 I was qualifying for a Supersport event and had Adam Fergusson come past me on a factory Honda and back it in sideways onto turn six, and that was my highlight for the weekend – it was unreal.
“I’d like to do a top-ten or mid pack finish which would be nice, but these guys are the real deal and I will probably be the oldest person on the grid so I am just happy to get out there.”
