Burns ready to fire up the Island

Kane Burns (GJ Gardner Homes) says he is up for the challenge this weekend, as the tight Supersport class gets set for the final round of the 2015 Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli at Phillip Island.

The event takes place from 2-4 October, and in the Yamaha Supersport class Burns trails Brayden Elliott (Brayden Elliott Racing) by 20 points heading into the championship decider.

Burns put in a great display of riding at the penultimate round of the series in Tasmania, and says that he is ready to hit the Island where he has had great success in the past.

“It certainly should be a great event this weekend,” he said.

“I have always done well at Phillip Island and I think it is going to help me – Brayden (Elliott) has done a lot of testing there in recent weeks so it will be interesting to see how he goes.

“I need to get through race one with a solid result, and if I can do that I go into race two with everything to gain – I have nearly everything to gain and nothing to lose.”

Burns is upbeat about his chances to claim the 2015 title, and is a firm believer that it is never over until it is officially declared so.

“I suppose the championship is never over until someone has lifted the trophy really, so my plan is just to go out and win as many races as I can, and whatever happens from there is out of my control,” he said.

“At the end of the day it can come down to a faulty tyre – there are so many different variables that can come into play, and it is never over until the end.

“I think Brayden knows that – he certainly has a comfortable lead and is in a great place heading into the last round, but every rider knows until the last chequered flag is out there is always hope.”

Burns said that he has been pleased with his season to date, and is looking forward to capping of a successful year at the final round.

“At the start of the year I went into the season and I didn’t think I would be battling for a championship – so that is definitely a bonus.

“But now looking back at the year I have actually ridden through a lot of problems that we have had throughout the year that people didn’t realise as we’ve kept them under our hats.

“So to get some of the result I have had with some of the problems I have had as weekends and rounds has been quite awesome.

“I have proved throughout the year being the only rider to finish on the podium at each and every single round that I can keep it consistent – I now just need to win a few races and I think I can do that at Phillip Island.”

The Suzuki rider from New South Wales has had a successful racing career to date in Australia, and is hoping to add another big achievement to his resume on the weekend.

“To win a championship would be amazing.

“I am quitely confident that things may happen and hopefully it all pans out my way – there is always drama in motorsport, and hopefully I am on the lucky end of it.

“For me I have finished second in a lot of Australian Titles in the past years and won a couple – the first one I ever won Brayden was second to me, so hopefully I can put him back in the same place and this year it can work out once again for me!

“I suppose in a nice way I have to hope that he doesn’t have a dream weekend and I do, and whatever happens from there is up to luck but I think the championship is still well and truly alive.”
