Agius Closes on Supersport 300 Lead

Senna Agius has closed to within 16 points of the YMI Supersport 300 lead, by taking the overall victory in the penultimate round at Phillip Island this weekend.

As with Race 1 yesterday, both today’s races featured a tightly-contested lead pack, with the lead swapping between different riders on multiple occasions each lap.

However, Agius displayed superb race-craft, finishing second behind Luke Jhonston in Race 2 and then slipstreaming his way past Jhonston and Yannis Shaw to take the win in Race 3, which was decided by a video review after less than 0.1s separated the top three across the finish line.

Agius, Jhonston and Shaw also ended up as the top three finishers for the round.

“I had a few dramas on the last lap, I dropped back at bit,” Agius said.

“I managed to get back to the lead pack, and I knew it was close between Luke and me. I’m glad to take the overall win.”

“It was a full-on race, I actually got tapped down the straight,” Jhonston said. “Congratulations to Senna on the race win – it’s been a good weekend with my race win and a couple of podiums.

“It was tough – those guys were crazy, and we planned our second and third races based on what happened in Race 1,” Shaw said. “I got pipped before the end, but I’m happy to be on the podium again.”

Points leader Max Stauffer only finished sixth for the round; as a result, Agius made a 23-point gain in the championship.

Laura Brown, who scored a pair of eighth-place finishes, scored the AGV Helmets Award for Fastest Female.

The YMI Supersport 300 title will be decided at the Motul Pirelli ASBK season finale, 1-3 November.
