Juniors and Sidecars put on a show at Winton

The Spokes.com.au presents Round 3 at Winton Motor Raceway was treated to great racing from the GP Juniors Cup and Australian Sidecar Championship, part of the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli.

GP Juniors Gup
The riders of the GP Juniors Cup had a tight tussle for the victories on Sunday. Tommy Edwards (Enemies Everywhere, Yamaha YZF-R15) would take out the overall Round with his two wins and 3rd place finish.

Race Two
Race Two of the GP Juniors once again featured a quartet of riders battling at the front. As the riders took off from the start line, Tommy Edwards went into the lead.  It wasn’t before long that he came under pressure from the other riders. As the top four broke away Tommy Edwards , Joel Kelso (JDS Moto Deborah Motorsports, Yamaha YZF-R15), John Lytras (Caboolture Yamaha, Yamaha YZF-R15), Ben Baker (Yamaha YZF-R15) were all engaged in a monumental scrap.

The four chopped and changed positions until the final lap, where Tommy Edwards took the lead. On the last lap, Jack Cousins’ (TM Performance, Yamaha YZF-R15) crash at turn two caused a red flag period. Due to the red flag on the last lap the results were counted back to the last lap completed by all the riders, which was lap three.

As result of the count back John Lytras took the win as the race leader on lap three. Joel Kelso took second place, while lap five leader Tommy Edwards was relegated back to third place.

Race Three
It was tight scrap into turn one as the riders from the front row had an even start, but Joel Kelso got the hole shot into turn one. It wasn’t before long though that Tommy Edwards snatched the lead.

Once again it would be a battle between Edwards, Kelso, Lytras and Baker in the top four. The overtakes at the front were frequent with Edwards and Kelso chopping and changing positions at the front.

Eventually John Lytras took the lead on lap four and looked on course for a potential victory. Unfortunately for John Lytras he crashed on the final lap and had to remount his bike. That allowed Tommy Edwards to fight his way to the front and take the win in front of Ben Baker and Joel Kelso to round out the podium positions.

Australian Sidecar Championship
Round One of the Australian Sidecar Championship was fought this weekend in spectacular fashion, as highly modified outfits delighted the crowd in a great show at Winton Motor Raceway.

Race Two quickly got underway at 1pm on the start grid. The F1 and F2 class machines launched down the straight as passengers reacting with lightning speed before the corners came up. The front of the pack broke away as the remainder of the 12 outfit race begun to separate out, the balance, strength and endurance of the passengers on full display.

The fastest lap was achieved on lap four, by Howard Ford/Lee Menzies (Suzuki LCR) stopping the clock at 1:31.924. Ford/Menzies did not ease off their pace, cruising home to victory with Joyce/ Blackman (Rick Hanger Racing, Kawasaki RHR), only 0.576 seconds behind.

Race Three of the Australian Sidecar Championship was the final race on track at Winton Motor Raceway. All outfits featured were away quickly and cleanly off the line and through the turn one and two combination, Boughen/O’kane (Sidefx F1 Suzuki LCR), Joyce/ Blackman and Ford/Menzies the front runners for the duration.

The highly successful Alton/ Clancy (J & C Contracting, F2 Honda Shelbourne) duo chased down the Brown/Sheldrick (APW Motorcycles, F1 JBR Suzuki GSXR) outfit as best they could as dicing begun. The front runner outfits looked twitchy through the Spokes.com.au corner on lap two, that saw Joyce/Blackman make a move to first position but was quickly shut down by Ford/Menzies. Outfits were being flicked sideways into right hand corners and leaving rubber streaks on the track as the level of desperation rose as the clock wound down.Goldie probably pushing too hard experienced extreme front end chatter on hard braking in some sections. The top three finishing order was Ford/ Menzies (F1) Joyce/Blackman (F1) Goldie /Crass (F2)
